Niners Remain Undefeated Stanford Latest Victim of 49er Attack September 25, 2001
Long Beach, CA- There is one less undefeated team in the nation tonight. No. 2-ranked Long Beach State (8-0) defeated No. 4-ranked Stanford (8-1) 30-27, 21-30, 30-21 and 30-25 in a non-conference match up at The Pyramid, Tuesday night. Tayyiba Haneef led the 49ers with 21 kills and .302 hitting percentage, while Cheryl Weaver added 16 kills and a .406 hitting percentage. Logan Tom had 15 kills and an uncharacteristic .174 hitting percentage for Stanford. Ogonna Nnamani added 14 kills. Stanford hit .226 as a team, compared to a .261 hitting percentage. Keri Nishimoto had 47 assists and 12 digs, while Brittany Hochevar added 11 kills and 12 digs. Tom also had 14 digs. Robyn Lewis had 48 assists. The crowd of 3,904 was the sixth largest crowd ever to see an LBSU women's volleyball match at the Pyramid, and second largest LBSU crowd this season. Under Brian Gimmillaro, Long Beach State had never beaten Stanford in five previous meetings. Hochevar ended the match, as LBSU won 30-23. Back-to-back kills by Hochevar and Haneef setup mjatch point. Stanford did not go quietly in game four, as runs cut the LBSU lead to 26-22 and 24-20. Ashanti Taylor's kill gave, followed by a Hochevar ace, gave The Beach a 23-15 lead. Numerous Stanford errors early in game four gave LBSU an 18-11 lead, and forced two Stanford timeouts. LBSU closed out game three on a 10-4 run, winning 30-21, despite Stanford fighting off four game points. LBSU hit .188, Stanford .088. Bulquerin's ace gave the 49ers some breathing room at 27-18. The Cardinal closed to 20-17, only to see Long Beach extend back to a 24-17 lead off a Haneef ace. LBSU had led 19-13. A Tom kill ignited a 7-2 run, as Stanford closed to 13-10. A hot start by the 49ers gave LBSU an 11-3 lead. Stanford took game two, 30-21, as the Cardinal hit .343 in game two. The 49ers hit .122. A late run by The Beach, closed the gap to 26-20. Stanford kept it at double digits with a Tom kill at 24-14. A Stanford block assist gave the Cardinal their first double digit lead at 21-11. Ashley Ivy's kill gave Stanford a 15-7 lead after an 11-5 lead forced Long Beach State's second timeout. Hochevar's kill ended game one, as the 49ers won 30-27. LBSU hit .286 in the first game, compared to a .333 percentage by the Cardinal. Haneef's ace gave LBSU some breathing room, at 28-26. Stanford was able to tie it up at 25-25, using an 8-3 run. The Beach forced another Cardinal timeout, extending to a 21-17 lead, as 5-3 Tracy Bulquerin capped a 5-1 run with her second kill of the season. A back-and-forth first half, saw neither team lead by more than two points. Long Beach State hosts UC Riverside on Friday at 7:30 p.m., while Stanford travels to California, also on Friday.
