CLASS OF 2001 ANNOUNCED Seven athletes inducated into LBSU Athletics Hall of Fame including White Sox's Jeff Liefer, Track and Field's Bill Green and Women's Volleyball Sheri Sanders. Long Beach, CA.--Long Beach State announced today (Aug. 6) its inductees for the 2001 class of the Long Beach State Athletics Hall of Fame. The seven-member class includes: Bill Green (Track & Field), Jeff Liefer (Baseball), Ramona Pagel (Track & Field), Sheri Sanders (Women's Volleyball), Mark Seay (Football), Jack Shainline (Administrative), and Lisa Hansen Stone (Crew). The Hall of Fame, which was established in 1986, will add these seven new members to its roster bringing the total to 148. This will be the 16th class to be inducted into the Long Beach State Athletic Hall of Fame. The cost to attend is $75 per person and $750 per table of ten. The Hall of Fame class of 2001 will be inducted at the 49er Hall of Fame Dinner on Wednesday, October 24 at the Hyatt Regency Long Beach. The 15th Annual Hall of Fame Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, September 24 at the newly designed Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach. The awards dinner following the golf tournament will be held at Spaghettini?s Italian Grill & Jazz Club. The cost is $250 per golfer and $1,000 per foursome. THE 49ER HALL OF FAME CLASS OF 2001 | Bill Green--Track & Field One of the top hammer throwers in the country...competed at the 1984 Olympics and finished in fifth place, the highest finish of any American...threw a career-best 255?...holds the 49er school record at 235?7?...was a three-time first team All-American while at LBSU...he finished fifth in the country at the 1981 NCAA Meet, fourth in 1982 and fourth in 1983...was the U.S. Champion three times in the hammer and is credited with a resurgence in the sport. |
| Jeff Liefer--Baseball Is second on the 49er career chart with 230 hits and 160 RBI, while first in career home runs with 30...was named second team All-America in 1995 by Baseball America and by the Smith Super Team...first team All-Big West Conference at third base in 1995 and second team in 1993 as the 49ers advanced to the College World Series...also ranks fourth in career runs scored (151) and second in at bats (693)...started 179 games in his three-year career...hit 13 homers in 1995 and batted .354 with 56 RBI to lead the club in all three categories...selected in the first round (25th pick overall) in the 1995 draft by the Chicago White Sox. |
| Ramona Pagel--Track & Field Finished seventh at both the 1981 and 1982 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the shot put to earn first team All-America honors while attending Long Beach State...competed in four Olympic Games for the U.S. with her best finish being ninth at the 1996 Games in the shot put...she is the current American record holder in the indoor and outdoor shot put events...worked at Kent State University for three years, two as a volunteer track & field coach, working with the throwers, and the final year as assistant facilities manager...prior to that she was an assistant track & field coach at San Diego Mesa College...most recently she was a volunteer assistant at Radford University. |
| Sheri Sanders--Women's Volleyball A four-year letterwinner (1986-89) for the 49ers, Sanders is the 49er career assist leader with 6,301...that mark ranks #5 all-time in NCAA history...selected a first team AVCA All-American in 1989 in leading the 49ers to the 1989 NCAA Championship...first team All-Northwest Region in 1989 and was also first team All-Big West...second team All-Big West in 1988 and was named to the 1986 Big West All-Freshman Team...led nation in 1988 at 14.02 assists per game...has the top two single season assist marks in 49er history with 1,768 in 1989 and 1,682 in 1988...also ranks third all-time at LBSU with 151 career aces. |
| Mark Seay--Football Ranks #5 all-time with 132 career receptions and #4 with 2,074 career receiving yards...his 13 career touchdown receptions ties him for fourth all-time at LBSU...2nd team all-conference in 1990 and 1991...also returned kickoffs for the 49ers and his 749 return yards in 1988 is a school record, while his 586 yards in 1990 ranks #2 all-time...totaled 2,121 career yards in kickoff returns to rank first all-time...caught 39 passes for 592 yards and 7 touchdowns as a senior in 1991...caught 48 passes for 771 yards in 1990...drafted in the 1992 NFL Draft by San Diego Chargers. |
| Jack Shainline--Administrative Jack Shainline was the Vice President for Student Services at Long Beach State for 24 years, from 1996-1989...he served numerous years as the Chairman on the Advisory Committee on Athletics and on the Student Affairs Committee, just to name a few...was instrumental in founding the CSULB Disabled Student Services Program and was a prime mover to provide specialized services for Veterans on campus...worked at Gettysburg College from 1948-1965, serving as the Associate Dean of Admissions from 1955-57 and as the first Dean of Students at Gettysburg from 1957-65...also coached football and wrestling at Gettysburg. |
| Lisa Hansen Stone--Crew Competed at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, finishing eighth in the women?s quadruple sculls...competed in three World Championships for the United States, winning the Bronze medal at the 1977 and 1978 championships in women?s double sculls...came in sixth at the 1979 Championships in the quadruple sculls...in 1978 she won the single sculls, double sculls, quadruple sculls and single dash at the National Women?s Rowing Championships...competed for the U.S. Rowing Team from 1974-79...was the varsity crew coach at Harvard from 1980-86 and is currently the crew coach at Windsor School in Boston, MA. |
