Beach Knock Off Sixth Top-25 Pacific Latest to Fall to Top Ranked Niners; 3-0 November 3, 2001
Long Beach, CA- The No. 1-ranked 49ers (20-0, 13-0 Big West) defeated their sixth top-25 team tonight, knocking off No. 17-ranked Pacific (20-7, 11-3 Big West) 30-28, 30-21 and 30-24. For the top ranked team in the country it was their 16th sweep of the season. The 3,172 fans tonight was the 10th largest crowd ever to see a LBSU volleyball match. Tayyiba Haneef led LBSU with 14 kills, 13 digs and a .382 percentage, while Cheryl Weaver added 10 kills, seven digs and five blocks. Brittany Hochevar had nine kills, a .333 percentage and a season-high 17 digs. Jamie Hamm led Pacific with 13 kills and 19 digs, while Jennifer Joines added 11 kills. LBSU hit .295, while Pacific hit .140. Megan Hauschild had 34 assists and 13 digs for Pacific, while her counterpart, Keri Nishimoto had 41 assists and nine digs. LBSU closed out the match on a 6-0 run, winning game three 30-24. Haneef's kill gave LBSU some breathing room at 26-24. Misty Swails kills gave Pacific a brief 23-22 lead. Two straight Haneef kills gave The Beach an 18-15 lead before UOP tied it at 18-18. The 49ers scored four of the final five points of game two to win 30-21. The Niners hit .442, Pacific .224. Hochevar ended a long rally with a kill as The Beach upped their lead to 24-14. Four straight kills for Weaver gave LBSU an 18-9 lead. Weaver's kill gave LBSU a 14-8 lead and forced a UOP timeout. Weaver completed the comeback in game one with a block solo as The Beach won 30-28. The 49ers hit .209, compared to UOP's .120 percentage. Hochevar's putback gave LBSU a 29-28 lead. Haneef's kill gave The Beach their first lead, at 20-19. A blocking error by UOP tied it at 18-18. A Thomas kill, as part of a 13-7 run, closed the gap to 18-16 after Pacific jumped out to an 11-3 lead. The Beach next travel to UC Irvine next Saturday at 7 p.m. while Pacific hosts Idaho on Thursday. BOX SCORE |
