The Record: Long Beach State will take on CS Dominguez Hills on Friday, November 9 in their second exhibition contest of the season. On November 1 the 49ers fell to the LA All-Stars, 112-108, in overtime. Long Beach State has put together back-to-back winning seasons and piled up 42 wins over the last two campaigns (42-19/.689). Last year the 49ers went 18-13. The 49ers have also finished above .500 in league play the past three years, compiling a 34-14 (.708) mark during that time and a 25-7 (.781) record in league play the last two years.
The Coach: Long Beach State Head Coach Wayne Morgan (St. Lawrence, 1973) is 78-67 (.538) in five years with the 49ers. With 78 career victories at LBSU, Morgan is tied for fourth place, with Tex Winter, on the LBSU coaching victories chart.
Beach Falls To LA All-Stars: In their opening exhibition game of the season the Long Beach State mens basketball team dropped a 112-108 overtime decision to the LA All-Stars. The 49ers had five players score in double digits, led by Ron Johnsons 26 points. Michael Darrett added 20 points and 5 assists, Travis Reed 18 points and 14 rebounds, Rudy Williams 15 points and Tony Darden 14. The 49ers outrebounded the All-Stars, 52-50, as Reed led the way with 14 boards and Williams adding 9. Long Beach did commit 29 turnovers and shot only 9-31 (.290) from 3-point range.
CS Dominguez Hills Facts: The Toros were 7-19 last season and finished in 10th place in the CCAA with a 6-16 mark. The top returnees for the Toros are Mario Perez (G, 5-10, Sr., 5.2 ppg, 6.0 apg) and Vincent Warsaw (G/F, 6-4, Sr., 3.4 ppg, 2.7 rpg). CSUDH returns just one starter from last year's squad and feature a roster with 14 new players. Head coach Larry Hauser is in his fifth year at CSUDH and has a career mark of 34-70.
Lemi Williams To Redshirt: Senior Lemi Williams (Hayti, MO) will in all likelyhood redshirt this year for the 49ers due to stress fractures in both shins. Williams will be getting a second doctors opinion to see if surgery is necessary, or just extended rest. Williams averaged 11.7 points per game last year for the 49ers and shot .355 (49-138) from 3-point range and .712 (84-112) from the free throw line.
Guard Play Strong: In the opening exhibition game, the 49er starting guards of Ron Johnson (San Diego) and Michael Darrett (Evansville, IN) combined for 46 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists and 7 steals. Johnson finished the game with 26 points and 5 steals, while Darrett contributed 20 points, 5 assists and 5 rebounds. Johnson was 4-11 from 3-point range and Darrett knocked down 3-5 attempts from long-range. Combined from the field, the par were 16-29 (.552), 7-16 (.438) from 3-point range and 7-8 (.875) from the charity stripe.
Rudy Sees First Action: Senior center James Rudy Williams (St. Louis, MO) appeared in his first game since his successful surgery on his shins and came away with 15 points, 9 rebounds and 3 steals in 25 minutes of action. Williams was 6-9 from the field for the contest. In 1999-00, Williams was named second team All-Big West Conference after averaging 12.2 points and a team-high 7.3 rebounds per game while shooting .559 frm the field. Williams led the 49ers in steals and was second in blocked shots during that 1999-00 campaign, which saw the 49ers finish at 24-6.
Reed Looks To Double Up Again: Last year senior center Travis Reed (Fontana) had a team-high 10 double-double's on the season. In Thursdays exhibition opener he picked up where he left off with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Reed was 8-12 from the field in his 36 minutes of action. Last year, Reed averaged 14.5 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. He led the Big West Conference in rebounding, the first time a 49er had led in that category since Francois Wise won back-to-back rebounding titles in 1978-79 and 1979-80. Reed also finished 7th in the league in scoring, 4th in field goal percentage and 6th in blocked shots.
Kevin Roberts Starts Exhibition: Sophomore Kevin Roberts (Petaluma) started at the three spot in Thursdays exhibition game vs. the LA All-Stars. Roberts finished the game with 8 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals in 25 minutes of action. Last season Roberts averaged 4.9 points and 3.5 rebounds per game while shooting .536 from the field and .759 from the free throw line. In Big West games, he averaged 6.9 points and 4.7 rebounds per game while shooting .617 (37-60) from the field and .805 (33-41) from the free throw line.
Souza Plays In First Game: Junior forward Tadeu Souza (Sao Paulo, Brazil) redshirted last year due to knee surgery, but is back at full strength this season. Souza started vs. the LA All-Stars and finished with 7 rebounds and 2 assists in 19 minutes. Souza didnt score, but provided strong interior defense.
Darden Lights Up For 14: Junior Tony Darden (Snow Hill, NC) tallied 14 points off the bench in the game vs. the LA All-Stars. Darden also chipped in with 4 assists in his 38 minutes. A .440 percent shooter from 3-point range last year at Dodge City Community College, Darden was just 2-10 from long-range on Thursday.
Lawhorn Puts In Good Minutes: Junior forward Vance Lawhorn (Las Vegas, NV) played 11 minutes in the opening exhibitin contest and finished with 4 points, 4 rebounds and 1 block. Lawhorn, who redshirted last year, came to LBSU from Dixie JC where he averaged 18.6 points and 7.5 rebounds per game as a sophomore in 1999-00.
Bowens Plays In First Collegiate Game: Freshman guard Mark Bowens (Peoria, AZ) played 7 minutes in Thursdays exhibition game vs. the LA All-Stars. Bowens, averaged 25.5 points and 5.0 assists per game last year at Cactus High School and was a first team All-State selection. Bowens finished with 3 points and 2 assists on the evening, going 3-4 from the free throw line.
Firing Away: Last season the 49ers connected on 178-534 of its 3-point attempts. The 178 3-pointers made is the third-best single season total in 49er history. The 534 attempts set a new school record, breaking the old mark of 520 set by the 1992-93 squad. In the exhibition opener vs. the LA All-Stars the 49ers took 31 shots from 3-point range, connecting on 9.
Stealing Away: Long Beach State led the Big West Conference in steals last season, averaging 8.26 steals per game. Ron Johnson led the league with 69 steals (2.30 spg) and Michael Darrett was second with 53 (1.71 spg). On the 49ers single season steal chart, Johnson's 69 steals ranks 3rd and Darrett's 53, 11th.
Four Games On TV: The 49esr will have four televised games this season, all on the FOX Sports Network. The USC game on December 12 will be telvised live from The Pyramid on Fox Sports West at 7:35 pm. Fox Sports West 2 will televise the games at Cal Poly on January 24, at CS Fullerton on January 31 and at home against UC Irvine on February 28. The three games on Fox Sports West 2 will begin at 5:30 pm.
Scoring In The Big West: The 49ers led the Big West in scoring in league outings last season, averaging 75.9 points per game. The previous year (1999-00) the 49ers also the the league in scoring in league games at 80.3 points per outing. In the 16 league games the 49ers scored 80 or more points 6 times and 70 or more points 12 times. In all games, the 49ers averaged 75.0 points per game, second-best in the league behind Cal Polys 80.0 average.
