49ers Sweep 20th Match of the Season Beach Look to Run the Table Tomorrow Versus Utah State November 19, 2001
LONG BEACH, CA-- The No. 1-ranked 49er women's volleyball team (24-0, 17-0 Big West) swept visiting Idaho (10-17, 5-12 Big West) 30-15, 30-20 and 30-23 and will look to run the table Tuesday night when they host Utah State in the final conference matchup of the season. The match, rescheduled due to the Terrorist attacks on September 11, drew 1,283 fans. The Beach have now won 31 games in a row and swept their 20th opponent in 24 matches. Should The Beach run the table tomorrow night, it will be the sixth time in conference history and first time since LBSU swept through the conference season in back-to-back seasons in 1997 and 1998. Brittany Hochevar scored a season-high 16 kills, while hitting .700 as the nation's top offense hit a season-high .526. The .700 hitting percentage was the third-best hitting percentage all-time at LBSU for players with 20-29 attempts. Reigning Big West Conference Player of the Week Tayyiba Haneef added 14 kills, seven digs, and three blocks while hitting .458. Cheryl Weaver also had a strong night, finishing with 14 kills, a .650 percentage, and seven blocks. Keri Nishimoto had 44 assists. For Idaho, Long Beach native Anna-Marie Hammond had 11 kills and a .368 percentage, while freshman Brooke Haeberle had 11 kills and a .292 percentage. Jenny Neville had 22 assists as the Vandals hit .196. The Beach took the sweep, as the 49ers scored the final six points to win 30-23. UI had closed to 24-23 and had led 16-12 off a Haeberle kill, using a 5-0 run. In game two, Lindsay Phillips kill closed out the second set, finishing off a 13-7 run by The Beach. Phillips also closed out game one, as the 49ers broke a 9-7 advantage by scoring 21 of the final 29 points. Idaho will travel to UC Irvine tomorrow night, while Utah State heads North to The Pyramid. USU swept the Anteaters earlier tonight. The Beach will then close out the regular season on Friday and Saturday when they host the Thanksgiving Classic. BOX SCORE |
