49ers Fight Off UCSB to Sweep Weaver Comes Up with 22 Kills; Team Hits .336 October 20, 2001
SANTA BARBARA, CA-- Cheryl Weaver and Tayyiba Haneef provided the power, while Lindsay Phillips provided the finesse as the No. 1-ranked 49ers (15-0, 9-0 Big West) swept No. 23-ranked UC Santa Barbara (10-8, 8-2 Big West) 31-29, 30-28 and 32-30 at the Thunderdome on Saturday night. Weaver led all players with 22 kills and a .386 percentage, while Haneef added 18 kills and a .333 hitting percentage, as The Beach swept their 11th opponent in 15 tries. Weaver also added nine blocks and 10 digs. Lindsay Phillips' kill in game two, was part of a 3-0 game ending rally-- which LBSU won 30-28-- while her block in game three ended the match and completed another 3-0 run. Phillips, who has been limited to the back row since recovering from a season-ending ACL injury last year, had two kills and 12 digs. Keri Nishimoto again led the nation's top offense with 57 assists and 10 digs-- her second double-double in as many nights-- as The Beach hit .336 as a team. Danielle Bauer led UCSB with 16 kills and 11 digs, while Erica Menzel had 13 kills. Brie Lampe also reached double digits with 11 kills. UCSB hit .201 as a team as Brooke Niles led with 42 assists. Brittany Hochevar nearly had a double-double, finishing with nine kills, a .368 percentage and 14 digs. UCSB led for most of game three and had a 29-27 lead, before two straight Elisha Thomas kills tied it at 29-29. After Menzel scored on a kill, to give UCSB a 30-29 lead, a Haneef and Phillips kill gave LBSU a 31-30 lead. Instead of swing, Phillips lifted the ball over the UCSB defense for dump to give LBSU a 31-30 lead. Phillips and Thomas then combined on a block assist to end the game. In game two, a Menzel kill gave the Gauchos a 25-22 lead before a 5-1 run, capped by a Haneef kill gave the 49ers a 27-26 lead. After a Brie Lampe kill retook the lead for the Gauchos at 28-27, three straight points, including kills by Thomas and Phillips ended the second set. In game one, UCSB fought off four game points to tie it at 29-29, before a Hochevar kill gave LBSU their final lead of the game at 30-29.
