Sandra Shirley is the director of the Bickerstaff Academic Center, Long Beach State's academic support arm for student-athletes. The Bickerstaff Academic Center for Student-Athlete Services is committed to assisting all NCAA student-athletes in maintaining the academic standards necessary for NCAA eligibility, graduation, and achieving their overall educational goals.
As director of the Bickerstaff Academic Center, Shirley is responsible for a staff of six advisors who are responsible for helping over 350 student-athletes reach their academic goals each year. The BAC staff help student-athletes gain a complete university experience within academics and athletics, helping with course selection and degree completion at Long Beach State.
Shirley graduated from Long Beach State in 1994, working as a student assistant with the Center for Student-Athlete Services while starring for four years with Long Beach State's softball team. Reaching the Women's College World Series in each of her four years with the 49ers, Shirley is a member of the Long Beach State Athletics Hall of Fame as well as the City of Long Beach Baseball/Softball Hall of Fame.
After completing her teaching credential, Shirley returned to the CSAS in 1997 as an Academic Coordinator for both basketball programs. Focusing on advising and mentoring programs, Shirley was named the center's Assistant Director one year later. She was then named Associate Director in 2003, and gained her additional responsibilities when the program moved into the Bickerstaff Academic Center and changed names.
