FAQs

What is Alternative Consultation?
Alternative consultation is an alternative to the referendum process to ensure appropriate and meaningful consultation from the campus community, particularly students, when adjusting a Category II mandatory fee, like the IRA fee. Alternative consultation strategies are dependent on input from the student body association and the Student Fee Advisory Committee to ensure the process is transparent, and meaningful.

The alternative consultation process is designed to 1) engage large portions of the student body; 2) inform the University of the value of Beach Athletics, 3) identify alternative ways Beach Athletics can improve in the future.

For additional information, read Executive Order 1102 and the CSU Fee Policy on Referendums and Alternative Consultation Processes.

Why Alternative Consultation?
We believe alternative consultation will allow Athletics to acquire critical feedback from students, alumni, and community members. The input we receive will continue to guide the University as it relates to Athletics.

Why Now?
We are experiencing a transformational moment in NCAA collegiate athletics. With new and impending changes to the collegiate athletics model, Beach Athletics must explore more dependable sources of revenue to sustain a successful Athletics program.

How much would the IRA fee increase?
If approved, the fee would increase by approximately $64 per semester.

When will the fee increase be implemented?
If approved, the fee increase will be in effect starting with the 2023 Fall Semester.

Will my financial aid cover the cost?
Yes, the IRA fee is a mandatory student fee, and would factor into students’ total cost of education and impacts on estimated family contribution. Therefore, financial aid (including grants and loans) can be used to cover increases in these mandatory fees. Over 70% of students utilize financial aid at LBSU. Always defer to the financial aid office with any questions related to student fees and/or financial aid.

How do LBSU student fees compare to other CSU campuses?
Currently, LBSU total student fees rank 20th lowest of 23 campuses. If approved at $64 per semester, LBSU total student fees would rank 18th of 23 campuses.

With this fee adjustment, what can students expect?
Students will continue to receive free admission to all home games, increased free use of Pyramid facility from 3 to 5 events annually, and continued enjoyment of 19 highly visible and successful intercollegiate athletics programs.  Additionally, the introduction of new partnerships and alliances with the campus community including increased paid and unpaid internship opportunities, student assistant jobs, closer ties with intramural and club sports.
