Named after long-time Long Beach State Track & Field coach, Jack Rose, the Jack Rose Track features 400-meter all-weather track and runways and grass turf throughout the infield.
Located adjacent to the Barrett Center and under the shadow of the Walter Pyramid, Jack Rose Track is positioned to enjoy ideal wind conditions for all sprinting, jumping and throwing events, and can host a full meet within its confines.
World Athletics (formerly IAAF) awarded Class 2 Certification, a rare distinction among athletics facilities not just throughout the country but worldwide in 2020. The culmination of a multi-year process, the certification program was implemented by World Athletics to help ensure the accuracy and integrity of the sport worldwide at an elite level, and recognize running surfaces, facilities and equipment that meet an International Competition standard. Jack Rose Track met the standards for Class 2 certification, which in the words of the organization shows that the "synthetic surface has a valid IAAF Product Certificate and … the facility conforms to the stringent requirements for accurate measurement contained in IAAF Competition Rules."
Long Beach State joined a handful of universities in receiving World Athletics Certification in Oregon, Auburn, Arkansas, Kansas, Texas A&M, Indiana, North Florida, and UT-San Antonio in partnership with the city of San Antonio. Jack Rose Track is also just the 13th facility in the United States to receive World Athletics Certification, joining the track and field stadium at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson as the only such facilities in the state of California.
The stadium track offers Long Beach State student-athletes a world-class home to train and compete on. The state-of-the-art competition areas features a 9-lane track that is NCAA, USATF and IAAF certified. The desirable European oval design offers wide radius turns with 48" lanes. The shorter straightaway feature of the track creates a longer, smoother curve than the typical 100 meter-by-100 meter configuration. This longer, smoother curve will give this facility the reputation as on the fastest tracks in the United States, if not the world.
The field event areas consists dual infield competition throwing circles for shot put, dual infield discus rings, dual javelin runways, an outside competition hammer/discus ring, and an additional outside shot put throwing pad for additional training and competitions.
The jumping areas consists of dual infield, side-by-side approaches for high jump, and dual parallel outfield runways for long/triple jumps and pole vault that can be reversed for wind conditions, if needed.
The dual runways and throwing rings offer the ability to host multiple event competition, allowing the university to host top-level invitational meets as well as national championships. The universities unique location near the ocean allows our facility to take advantage of optimal, on-shore wind conditions for all jumping, throwing, and sprinting events.
The main finish line is located on the east side of the stadium. When fully completed, this area will provide seating for 3,500 seats and press box that meets A.D.A. requirements and allows for sound, timing, and video display operations under all weather conditions. Seating on the west side of the stadium is primarily for field event spectating on the backstretch, adjacent to the outside jumps location. Seating capacity on the west side backstretch will be 1,500.
Team areas and student seating will be located on the north and south turns. The terraced design of these unique seating areas will showcase The Beach and provide enclosure to the stadium. The final product will exceed the NCAA and USA Track & Field requirement for hosting championship events. The terraced areas would be cement, with synthetic turf on this multiple-level landscaped terrace.
Besides being the home of the Long Beach State track and field program, the site has been featured in a number of television and movie spots, including American Pie and The Gail Devers Story.
