LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Sophomore JaQuoia Jones-Brown reached the 500-point milestone of her collegiate career Saturday afternoon, turning in a standout performance despite a 72-56 loss at UC Santa Barbara inside the Thunderdome.
Jones-Brown led Long Beach State with 19 points and pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds, recording her fifth double-double of the season. She became the latest Beach player to surpass 500 career points, reaching the mark early in the fourth quarter with a pull-up jumper that pushed her total past the milestone.
The Beach opened the game with strong energy, trading baskets with the Gauchos in the early minutes. UC Santa Barbara found its rhythm late in the first quarter, using a perimeter scoring surge to take a 19-11 lead. The Gauchos followed with an 18-point second quarter to extend the advantage to 37-18 at halftime.
Long Beach State responded after the break, shooting over 50 percent in the third quarter. Jones-Brown anchored the effort on both ends of the floor, controlling the glass and scoring through contact as the Beach cut into the deficit. UC Santa Barbara answered with timely shooting to maintain control entering the final period.
In the fourth quarter, Jones-Brown continued to attack in transition and at the free-throw line as Long Beach State scored 23 points on 47.1 percent shooting. The Gauchos countered with balanced scoring and late three-pointers to seal the victory.
Khylee Pepe finished with 17 points for the Beach, while Rosie Akot added 12. Jones-Brown's milestone performance stood as the highlight of the afternoon, as she now sits at 508 career points, reaching the benchmark in just 48 games at Long Beach State.
The Beach returns home Thursday, January 29, to host UC Riverside in another Big West matchup. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
