Third-quarter surge lifts UC Riverside past Long Beach State
RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Long Beach State battled early but could not keep pace with UC Riverside in a 77-59 road loss on Thursday night at the SRC Arena.
The Beach stayed competitive in the opening quarter, trading leads and trailing just 18-14 after ten minutes. UC Riverside gradually created separation in the second quarter, taking a 34-26 lead into halftime as Long Beach State struggled to find consistency from the field.
The decisive stretch came in the third quarter, when UC Riverside outscored LBSU 21-7. The Beach shot just 3-for-19 in the period, allowing the Highlanders to extend the margin to 55-33 entering the final quarter. Despite a stronger offensive showing in the fourth, Long Beach State was unable to overcome the deficit.
JaQuoia Jones-Brown led LBSU with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Morgan Mack added 11 points off the bench. Kennan Ka and Khylee Pepe each contributed 10 points, with Pepe also drawing multiple fouls to get to the free-throw line. Long Beach State finished the game shooting 31.3% from the field and 26.1% from three-point range, while UC Riverside shot 45.3% overall.
The Beach were effective at the free-throw line (13-of-16), but UC Riverside's advantage in shooting efficiency and a strong third quarter proved to be the difference.
LBSU return home for Big West action against CSUN on Saturday, January 17. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. in the LBS Financial Credit Union Pyramid.
