Four Double-Figure Scorers Lift Long Beach State Over Pepperdine, 68-53

Savannah Tucker led the Beach with 14 points, while Cheyenne Givens added 11 points and six boards in the road win

MALIBU, Calif. – Long Beach State came into Firestone Fieldhouse and knocked off Pepperdine, 68-53, on Monday night. The Beach got strong performances from several players as four scored in double-figures to lead LBSU over the Waves.

The Beach (3-2) shot 45.3 percent (24-53) from the field and dished out 12 assists, while picking up 10 steals and forcing the Waves (2-6) into 18 turnovers. Long Beach State went on to score 26 points off of turnovers as the Beach led by as many as 20 in the contest to take the victory.

Savannah Tucker led Long Beach State with 14 points, while adding three rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Also scoring in double-digits were Casey Valenti Paea (12 points), Sydney Woodley (12 points), and Cheyenne Givens (11 points).

Givens led the Beach with six rebounds and four steals, while distributing three assists. Woodley, meanwhile, chipped in three steals of her own.



Patricia Chung came away with a team-best four assists to go along with four rebounds and two points.

Long Beach State started the game off strong as the Beach won the opening tip and quickly scored a three from Lovely Sonnier in the first 13 seconds of action. The Waves would counter and even the score at 8-all by 4:07. However, Long Beach State drained another three, this time from Givens, at 2:34 to take a 14-10 lead. From there, the Beach held a 16-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Pepperdine was quick to tie the game at 17-17 in the second quarter after a layup from Maggie Vick at 8:03. But the Beach would waste little time regaining their lead. Long Beach State used a 6-0 run to jump back in front, 23-17, by 3:42. Tucker closed out the frame with back-to-back threes to give LBSU an 11-point lead (33-22) at halftime.



The Beach came of the locker room and continued to control the game in the second half. Long Beach State led Pepperdine by as many as 15 points on two separate occasions in the frame. Meanwhile, the LBSU defense also kept the Waves off balance as they picked up four steals in the quarter, which helped the Beach hold a 10-point (49-39) advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

Long Beach State continued its steady offensive pace into the final quarter of action. The Beach went on a 7-0 run thanks to a three from Tucker to go back up by 15 (60-45) with 2:36 remaining. LBSU scored another seven-straight to take their largest lead of the game (67-47) with just 1:12 left on the clock. The Waves scored a pair of threes in the final minute to bring the deficit back down to 15, as Long Beach State came away with the 68-53 victory.

Ella Brubaker led the Waves with 11 points scored, while Jane Nwaba added 10 points, six rebounds, and three assists. Myra Gordon finished the game with nine boards, while adding three assists.

Long Beach State concludes his four-game road trip at No. 12/11 Texas on Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 5 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
