Long Beach State Opens Big West Action with 76-54 Win Over Cal Poly

The Beach had four players score in double-figures as they cruised to victory

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State women's basketball team got back on the court for the first time in nearly three weeks and kicked off Big West Conference action with a 76-54 victory over Cal Poly on Thursday night at the Walter Pyramid.

Long Beach State (8-1, 1-0 Big West) shot 48.1-percent from the field, while forcing Cal Poly (1-9, 0-1 Big West) to commit 23 turnovers in the Big West opener for both teams. The Beach picked up 15 steals and outrebounded the Mustangs, 32 to 27, while also holding the edge on assists, 15 to 11, en route to their first win of league play.

The Beach were led by Justina King, Jasmine Hardy, Ma'Qhi Berry, and Lauren Green who all reached double-figures in the game. King led the way with 18 points, while Hardy added 17. Berry finished with 13 and Green added 10.

King also led the Beach with a season-high seven assists to go along with three rebounds, and one steal. Meanwhile, Hardy drained five three-point field goals, while adding seven boards, two steals, two blocks, and one assist. Berry contributed four assists, three steals, and two rebounds, while Green posted five rebounds and two steals.



Kristyna Jeskeova earned the start and led the way with eight rebounds. Kianna Hamilton-Fisher came off the bench and led the way with four steals to go along with seven points, two boards, and a pair of assists.

The Beach used an 8-0 run in the first quarter, highlighted by a pair of threes from Hardy, to take a 12-6 lead over Cal Poly. Long Beach State led the rest of the way as they turned in their best offensive showing in the second quarter shooting 61.5-percent from the field en route to taking a 36-23 lead over the Mustangs at halftime.

Cal Poly managed to cut the Beach's lead down to seven (36-29) after opening the second half scoring six-straight points, but Long Beach State bounded back and went on a 10-0 run to open up a 46-29 advantage before taking a 54-36 lead into the fourth quarter.

The final 10 minutes of action saw LBSU open up a 20-point lead on Cal Poly as the Beach led by as many as 24 (76-52) before winning the game by a score of 76-54.

The Mustangs were led by Julia Nielacna and Maddie Willett who scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, who both posted six rebounds. Willett added five assists and four steals to lead Cal Poly.

Long Beach State will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 1 when the Beach host CSU Bakersfield at 4 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid. The game will be broadcasted live on ESPN+.
