Long Beach State’s Season Comes to an End with Loss to Cal Poly

The No. 5 seed Beach suffer a 59-48 loss to No. 8 seed Cal Poly on Tuesday evening in the first round of the Big West Tournament

LONG BEACH, Calif. –
The No. 5 seed Long Beach State women's basketball team saw its season come to an end in the first round of the Big West Conference Tournament on Tuesday evening in a 59-48 loss to No. 8 seed Cal Poly.

The Beach complete their season with a 13-17 overall record, while the Mustangs improved to 10-18 on the year and advance to face No. 3 seed UC Irvine in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, March 11 at 6 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid.

Long Beach State struggled offensively from the start as the Beach shot just 26.9 percent in the game, while Cal Poly posted a 46.3 shooting percentage. The Mustangs jumped out to a 5-0 start and, despite the Beach evening the score twice, held the lead for the entire contest.

Cal Poly controlled the game as LBSU was never able to shoot higher than 29.4 percent in a single quarter. The Beach managed to cut the Mustangs' lead down to one (22-21) with 2:29 remaining in the first half, bt found themselves down by four (25-21) at halftime.

The third quarter was the difference maker in the game as the Mustangs shot 61.5 percent and extended their lead to double-figures. Cal Poly led by as many as 13 (39-26) with 5:36 on the clock, but Long Beach State continued to battle.

LBSU managed to cut Cal Poly's lead to seven (49-42) at 4:09 in the fourth quarter, but the Mustangs remained in control and pushed their lead back up to double-digits (42-54) as Sierra Campisano led the visitors on a 6-0 run with four made free throws and a jumper with 3:23 left in the game. The Beach would not go away, but never came closer than eight (56-48), before dropping a 59-48 decision.

Campisano led all scorers with a double-double (30 points, 13 rebounds), while Abbey Ellis added 20 points and eight boards for Cal Poly.

Long Beach State was led by senior Cydnee Kinslow as the forward from Oakley, Calif., concluded her collegiate career with 10 rebounds, seven points, two assists, one steal, and did not commit a turnover in nearly 37 minutes of action.

Junior guard Shanaijah Davison led the Beach with 10 points, while contributing six rebounds, and three steals. Meanwhile, senior forward Aaryon Green wrapped up her career at the Beach with six points, two boards, one steal, and one block.
