Penny Toler Named 2019 Distinguished Alumna From College Of Liberal Arts

The LBSU women’s basketball legend has gone on to an exemplary career as an executive with the Los Angeles Sparks.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The office of Alumni Relations has announced that Penny Toler has been named as a Distinguished Alumna for 2019.
Toler is one of the all-time greats for Long Beach State women's basketball, helping lead the Beach to some of their highest heights as a player, making a pair of Final Four appearances in her three years at Long Beach State and averaging 21.7 points per game, the second-highest scoring average in school history.
A two-time All-American and two-time Big West Player of the Year, Toler is one of only three players to score over 2,000 career points, one of two players to score to score 1,000 points and make 500 assists, and still holds two school records in career free throw percentage and single season assists.
With her collegiate career concluded, Toler moved on to compete in the newly-formed WNBA, scoring the first basket in the league's history with the Los Angeles Sparks in her two seasons in a player.
In 1999, Toler took over as the team's general manager and an incredible executive career began. Under her leadership, the Los Angeles Sparks have won three WNBA championships and have qualified for the playoffs a record 18 times.
Toler is both the longest-tenured and most successful general manager in WNBA history. She was inducted into the LBSU Athletics Hall of Fame in in 1995 and had her jersey retired in 2007, an honor she also received with the Sparks.
