Davison finished with 20 points including the game-winner.
LOGAN, Utah – Shanaijah Davison scored 20 points, including the hitting the game-winner as Long Beach State won a gritty defensive battle 50-48 on the road at Utah State. The Beach also got a lift from Cydnee Kinslow, who was cleared to make her LBSU debut and led the Beach with nine rebounds in 37 minutes for the Beach.
Long Beach State (3-10) got 20 points from their sophomore sensation Davison, but it was the team's defense that was the star as the Beach held Utah State (5-6) to 48 points and just 13 field goals as the Aggies went 19-24 from the line.
The Beach also outrebounded the Aggies to win the battle on the glass 37-36, led by Kinslow as well as Kianna Hamilton-Fisher who shared the rebounding lead with nine rebounds.
Davison scored six points in the first quarter to help the Beach take an early lead, which the Beach held through most of the game, holding the Aggies to 17 points in the first two quarters while taking a 25-17 lead into the locker room. Utah State outscored the Beach 11-10 in the third, but LBSU still held a seven-point lead while hunting for their first road win of the season.
In the fourth quarter, the Aggies went on a run to create an exciting stretch run. Even though Utah State made just four field goals in the quarter, the Aggies made ten straight free throws as part of an 11-0 run that gave Utah State a 45-41 lead with 3:26 to go.
Naomi Hunt nailed a 3-pointer to cut into the lead, and pulled it to one at 47-46 with 1:43 to go. The Aggies made an 11th straight free throw, but Hannah Bassett-Meachem missed the second to keep the Utah State lead at two. Davison was fouled and hit both shots to tie the game with under a minute to play.
After a final defensive stop, Long Beach State played for the final shot, trusting Davison once more who came through, banking home a runner in the closing seconds to snag the team's second win in a row.
Long Beach State closes the non-conference schedule on December 29, returning to the Walter Pyramid and hosting New Mexico at 2 p.m.
