Long Beach, CAlif. - 1989 Long Beach State Hall of Fame Inductee Kim Maddox passed away earlier this week, following a years-long battle with ovarian cancer.
One of the first 49er basketball stars, Maddox averaged over ten points per game in all four seasons at the Beach from 1977-78 to 1980-81, helping guide the team to a 97-30 record in her four years as a starter.
A four-time first-team All-Conference selection, Maddox led the team to back-to-back conference championships in 1980 and 1981, and as a senior was a finalist for the Wade Trophy, given to the top women’s basketball player in the nation.
35 years after her playing career ended, Maddox still ranks among the best women’s basketball players ever at Long Beach State. Her 1,775 career points rank fourth all-time at the Beach, and her 461 career assists rank seventh all-time.
Staying in Long Beach following her graduation, Maddox went on to a 25-year career as a detective with the Long Beach Police Department, and also served as the co-president of Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Pride, earning acclaim for her work in the community in both roles.
Diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2014, Maddox briefly went into remission, but a return of the cancer spreading throughout her body including her liver left her too weak to continue chemotherapy.
