Aigner-Swesey And Cabrajac Capture Pairs Title At Aloha Invitational

Honolulu, Hawaii - Seniors Delainey Aigner-Swesey and Chelsea Cabrajac captured the Gold Bracket pairs title in the opening day of the Aloha Invitational at Waikiki Beach. The LBSU pair finished at the top of four rounds of competition featuring the top four teams from Saint Mary's and UCLA.
With Hawai'i off for Friday's competition due to a lack of additional competition dates, only invited schools Saint Mary's and UCLA joined No. 6 Long Beach State in the day's pairs competition.
Jenelle Hudson and Bre Mackie started off the day with a 21-17, 21-9 over Popovic/Wilkerson of Saint Mary's 21-17, 21-9, while Andrea McHugh and Ciana Wagner dropped a close three-setter, 19-21, 21-19, 15-10.
With Beach's top three teams continuing into the quarterfinals, Aigner-Swesey and Cabrajac won in straight sets over Maddie Smith and Elise Zappia 21-15, 21-19. The 49ers other pairs fell in that round, as Karly Drolson and Rachel Inouye of UCLA shocked Anete Brinke and Tyler Jackson in three sets 21-19, 12-21, 15-13, and Jenelle Hudson and Bre Mackie fell to UCLA's top flight Zoe Nightingale and Kamila Tan 21-14, 21-19.
Aigner-Swesey and Cabrajac continued their run with a 21-16, 21-11 win over Drolson/Inouye. Moving onto the finals, Aigner-Swesey and Cabrajac carried their momentum into a straight sets win 21-13, 21-16 over Dalas Dodd and Alexis Salmons of Saint Mary's.
Silver Bracket competition was held with single set matches featuring the remaining teams as well as back draw entries from the Gold Bracket. LBSU's No. 2 and No. 3 pairs each advanced to the finals in that draw, with Brinke/Jackon prevailing over Hudson/Mackie. Under the same rules, McHugh/Wagner won the consolation Bronze bracket over Hannah Lisera and Maegan Conroy of Saint Mary's.
Competition continues tomorrow in Waikiki with dual competition between all four participating teams: LBSU, UCLA, Saint Mary's, and Hawai'i.
