Huntington Beach, Calif. - No. 5 Long Beach State rolled past Irvine Valley to start the 2015 season, winning 5-0 and then put a scare into No. 4 Florida State but ultimately lost 4-1 to the Seminoles.

Long Beach State's No. 2 pair of Anete Brinke and Tyler Jackson were the big winners of the day, as the new freshman/senior tandem won their first match of the day easily, and then took down Stephanie Pellitteri and Taylor Nyquist of Florida State in three sets, 21-17, 14-21, 15-13.

The 49ers had a good opportunity to take down the Seminoles Tuesday, as three matches including Brinke/Jackson went into three sets. Bre Mackie and Jenelle Hudson rode strong serving from Hudson to a second set victory, but dropped an epic third set with Julie Brown and Melanie Pavels to fall 21-17, 14-21, 22-20.

Rachel Nieto and Sammee Thomas, each in their first matches with Long Beach State, also pushed FSU into three sets. The freshman duo rallied from a first set loss to force the third, but ultimately lost 21-17, 16-21, 15-9.

Florida State (3-1) had command of the match early, with a win at No. 1 against Delainey Aigner-Swesey and Chelsea Cabrajac 21-13, 21-12 from Jace Pardon and Sarah Wickstrom. The Seminoles also won in straight sets at No. 4, as Paranagua/Pellietteri won 21-15, 21-12 over Ciana Wagner and Andrea McHugh.

In the morning match, Long Beach State won easily, taking all five matches in straight sets. Along with Brinke/Jackson's win, Aigner-Swesey/Cabarajac were very strong in a 21-11, 21-11 win at No. 1, while McHugh/Wagner won 21-11, 21-17 and Nieto/Thomas won 21-12, 21-16. The closest match against Irvine Valley came at No. 3, where Mackie and Hudson prevailed 22-20 in the first set against Hailee Earnest and Hannah Matt before winning 22-20, 21-11.

Long Beach State (1-1) will play two more matches this week, as the 49ers have their home opener on Thursday, March 12, hosting Pacific and CSUN in a three-way dual match beginning at 11 a.m. on the LBSU sand courts.
