Anderson leads 49ers to 81-68 win at Cal State Northridge

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Larry Anderson scored 20 points to lead four 49ers in double figures as Long Beach State picked up an 81-68 Big West Conference win over Cal State Northridge Saturday night.

Anderson made 7-of-12 shots, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range, grabbed nine rebounds and handed out five assists to help LBSU move to 3-0 in league play and 10-6 overall. T.J. Robinson added 17 points and eight boards. James Ennis scored 12 points, grabbed eight boards, had four assists and grabbed two steals, while Casper Ware scored 12 points. Eugene Phelps led LBSU with a season-high 14 boards, as Long Beach State dominated Cal State Northridge (4-9, 1-2 Big West) on the boards, 47-33.

The 49ers made 27-of-61 shots (44.3 percent), including 10-of-25 (40 percent) from 3-point range. The 10 threes were a season high for LBSU.

Both teams got off to quick starts offensively with LBSU making 6 of its first 11 shots and CSUN countering hitting five of its first 10 field goals.

Ennis was 3-for-4 during the stretch with two assists to give the 49ers a 15-12 lead six minutes and 29 seconds into the game. Anderson added five points and two assists, while the Matadors got baskets from five different players.

Ware scored the 49ers next 10 points in a three minute and five second stretch after Northridge went ahead 16-15 to give LBSU a 25-16 lead.

The 49ers stretched the lead to 12 twice on a basket by Robinson to give LBSU a 35-23 lead and a pair of free throws by Robinson to make it 37-25, but CSUN rallied for six straight to cut it to six and force LBSU to take a timeout. The 49ers answered with a basket by Robinson to go into the locker room ahead by eight, 39-31.

Ennis and Ware led the way before the break with 10 points each, while Robinson and Anderson (five assists) added eight. Long Beach State connected on 14-of-31 shots (45.2 percent), including 7-of-16 (43.8 percent) from three. CSUN went 12-of-29 (41.4 percent) from the floor and 4-of-9 (44.4 percent) from three.

The 49ers came out in the second half and ran off seven straight points to get the lead to 46-31. Anderson started the run with a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws and Robinson ended it with two free throws.

Anderson and Robinson combined to score LBSU's first 12 points of the second half over a four minute and 10 second stretch to give LBSU a 51-37 lead at the first media timeout.

The Matadors hung around for much of the second half after the 49ers went cold from the free throw line. After making 11 of their first 12, LBSU connected on just two of its next 11 and led by nine with 5:43 to play. The 49ers put it away scoring nine of the next 11 points, including seven in a row to take a 72-54 lead with four minutes to go.
