Long Beach, Calif. - Freshman Ricky Montanez was the medalist in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Qualifying at Black Mountain Country Club in Henderson, Nevada, as he finished with a 4-under par 140. Montanez beat out three other players that took place on June 24-25 as he qualified for the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship that will take place on July 14-19, at Murphy Creek Golf Course in Aurora, Colorado.
"This will be Ricky's second trip to the USAPL after an appearance in 2006. His solid qualifier and previous experience will provide him with the confidence to succeed at this year's championship," said new LBSU Head Coach Bill Pourtre. "The USGA events provide a great competitive experience which will help in his growth as a top notch player. I expect Ricky to provide a leadership role in the upcoming year."
Montanez (Helendale) completed his first year with the 49ers as he competed in eight tournaments for The Beach and had a scoring average of 76.20. His best outing during the regular season was at the 62nd Western Intercollegiate as he tied for 36th place with a three-round score of 228 (83-68-77). Montanez concluded the 2007-08 campaign finishing tied for 29th at the Big West Conference Championships.
"I am very pleased for Ricky," said former 49er Head Coach Bob Livingstone. "There is nothing like playing in a USGA National Championship to get a feel for where you game is, how you match up against the best players in the country, and what you have to address in your game to get better, so this is a great opportunity for him."
