LONG BEACH-- Known for his recruiting talents in the Northeast, it didn't take long for first year Long Beach State Men's Golf Coach Bill Poutre to make an impact in Southern California. Poutre's first recruit will be a special one, as Orange County Player of the Year, Kevin Lim (Fullerton/Sunny Hills HS), from state champion Sunny Hills High School, has signed a National Letter of Intent and will begin playing starting in 2008-09.
"I am very impressed with Kevin's maturity and composure on the golf course," stated Poutre, who was recently named New England's Regional Coach of the Year following his final season at the University of Hartford. "He has an outstanding work ethic and is a great ball striker. Kevin is a great young man, knows how to win as an individual and as part of a team. He will have an immediate impact on our program."
The Orange County Register named Lim the county's Player of theYear after leading Sunny Hills to a State Championship. After a regular season nine-hole stroke average of 34, he fired 6-under-par 64 at Candlewood Country Club in Whittier to earn medallist honors by four strokes in the Southern Section Golf Championship. A couple weeks later, he shot a 1-under-par 71 in the CIF-South Sectional Championship at the SCGA Golf Course in Murrieta to help his team qualify for the state finals. Lim closed out his high school career at the CIF State Championship at Santa Maria Country Club with a team championship and a 17th place individual finish.
A native of Seoul, Korea, Lim came to the U.S. when he was in sixth grade and will enter Long Beach State in September as a 19-year old freshman.
He was a dominate player on the Florida Junior Tour, until he moved to Las Vegas in the ninth grade and continued that success out West. In 2005, at the age of 16, Lim qualified for the second stage of the U.S. Open and after qualifying for match play at the U.S. Juniors, lost in 19 holes to current UCLA player, Phillip Francis. Lim moved to Fullerton for his senior prep season, culminating in a state championship for Sunny Hills.
