NORMAN, Okla.--Talk about making an impression. In New England, no less. New Long Beach State golf coach Bill Poutre was named that area's Regional Coach of the Year following his work at his former school, the University of Hartford, where he was named the America Sky Coach of the Year and coached the league's top player.
The nine regional coaches of the year are also candidates for National Coach of the Year, announced later this week following the NCAA Championships in Indiana.
Poutre, who is on campus this week getting settled, turned Hartford, where he has spent the last four years, into one of the strongest programs on the East Coast. His 2007 class featured the No. 51 and No. 115 recruits in the country, according to Golfweek's World Junior Rankings.
Poutre also signed a top recruiting class in 2006 and helped lead the Hawks to back-to-back America East Conference championships (2006, 2007). Last season the Hawks advanced to the NCAA Division-I East Regionals for the first time in school history. Hartford increased its District I ranking from No. 11 to No. 1, while their national ranking went from No. 261 to No. 143 this season.
Poutre has a business degree from Hartford and is currently working on his MBA. He is also a graduate of MIT's School of Management.
