Eugene, Ore. - Oregon's Kaela Chapdelaine came very close to a triple-double in leading the University of Oregon (4-2) to a 66-45 victory over visiting Long Beach State (1-4) on Thursday evening.
Katie O'Brien had 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting for the 49ers who shot 37 percent. Chapdelaine finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and eight assists, as Oregon shot 43 percent. Karina Figueroa and Tyresha Calhoun also had 10 points a piece for the 49ers in the loss.
A Chapdelaine assist led to a Tamika Nurse three-pointer with 12:12 left to put Oregon up 42-27 to cap a 12-4 run. The run continued to mount, at 19-4, on a Taylor Lilley three with 10:20 left as Oregon took a 49-29 lead.
The Ducks led 25-18 at the break, converting 8-of-12 free throws, while the 49ers missed just one free throw attempt. Oregon shot 32 percent, but benefited from 13 first half turnovers by the 49ers and 13 fouls. LBSU shot just 33 percent, taking an early lead, but then hit just three field goals over an 11 minute stretch.
Six-straight points by The Beach gave them a 6-5 lead with 16 minutes remaining, before the Ducks scored 11 of the next 13 points, capped by a Micaela Cocks three-point play at 8:41 to give Oregon a 16-8 lead. Oregon would lead by as many as 10 points in the first half.
LBSU starting forward Valeriya Mussina is slated to miss 4-6 weeks after ligament damage was discovered in her left elbow. She left the game at San Jose State last Friday and did not return as an MRI discovered the injury this week.
Saturday's game at Portland State has been moved up to a noon start at Concordia University in Northeast Portland (2800 NE Holman St.) due to a faulty sprinkler and corresponding flooding at the PSU gymnasium.
