Season Ends For 49ers In Big West Tournament Opener

Anaheim, Calif. - After cutting the Cal State Fullerton lead to one point in the first half, a 14-3 run for the Titans would provide a lead too big for Long Beach State to surmount in a 69-51 loss in the first round of the Big West Tournament. Brett Timmons led the 49ers with 12 points, as the Beach finishes the year 9-20 overall.
Jasmine Scott led the Titans with 22 points, and Toni Thomas added a double-double for Cal State Fullerton with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Overall, the Titans shot 47.3 percent from the field, leading to the final margin.
Valeriya Musina started well for the 49ers, hitting two early shots to keep pace with the Titans. Cal State Fullerton took the first major lead of the game, moving ahead 11-6 after a Jasmine Scott three-pointer.
Long Beach State recovered, taking their first lead of the half at 15-13 after a three from Ally Wade, but the Titans hit Thomas for some quick baskets as part of a 7-0 run. A Figueroa three slowed the Titan momentum, but another 14-3 run from the Titans gave Cal State Fullerton a commanding halftime lead, going into the break ahead 38-29.
Early in the second half, the Cal State Fullerton was unable to continue their hot shooting from the first-half, where they hit over half of their shots. That start allowed the 49ers to pull within five at 42-37 over the first few minutes of the period. However, the Titans spread the floor and regained a 12-point lead after a 12-3 run capped by another three from Scott.
That cushion would carry the Titans to the end of the game, as Long Beach State was unable to get going on the offensive end, finishing with 22 turnovers limiting their opportunities on just 51 shots.
With the loss, Long Beach State finishes the season with a 9-20 overall record, closing out their second straight nine win campaign. Figueroa ends the year as the 49ers top scorer, while Courtney Jacob was the top rebounder for the Beach.
