Lederer Wins Long Beach Championship in Amateur Finale Brett Lederer, in his swan song as an amateur, won the Long Beach Men's City Championship with an impressive three-day performance. His final round of 69 on Sunday gave him a comfortable 4-stroke margin of victory over Chris Gilman of Yorba Linda (66) and Jeff Grant of Palm Desert (67) who both came from out of the pack to finish tied for second place. Lederer, who also won this title in 2003, became only the 5th multiple winner of this event in its 37-year history. Lederer grabbed the lead on the first hole when he birdied and second-round leader Tye Alexander of Los Angeles bogeyed. Lederer never relinquished the lead from that point on and continued to increase the margin with birdies on holes No. 10 and 11. Alexander had a chance to cut into his lead when he drove the green on the par-4 14th hole, but couldn't take advantage as he three-putted. Lederer gave himself a five-shot lead with a birdie on No. 15. "I just wanted to stay consistent today, make a few birdies and avoid the big mistakes. Everything worked out for me and I only had the one bogey on the 18th hole," said Lederer. Lederer will now make his professional debut in the $155,000 Long Beach Open later this month. Lederer, a Long Beach State alum, got off to a fast start in the tournament, shooting an incredible 10-under par 62 on Friday to take the early lead. It was the low round of Lederer's young career and it also tied the competitive course record at El Dorado. "I have never hit the ball as pure as I did today," Lederer said Friday. "I put a new set of irons in my bag this week and they obviously worked great." |
