Gibson And Suenaga Sign With Long Beach State
May 16, 2007
LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State Men’s Golf
Coach Bob Livingstone today announced the signing of two players to National
Letters-of-Intent. Steve Gibson (Orange, CA, Villa Park HS, Santiago Canyon
College) and Issei Suenaga (Trabuco Canyon, Santa Margarita HS) inked
with the 49ers this spring. Gibson will be an incoming junior while Suenaga
will be a freshman.
Gibson was recently named the Player of the Year for the Orange Empire
Conference, after recording a season-low stroke average of 70.25. Gibson’s
low round this year for Santiago Canyon College was a 9-under par 63 at
El Prado GC, and he recorded nine birdies in a match at Twin Oaks GC.
“Steve is an excellent, and consistent, player,” said Livingstone.
“He is not afraid to go low, and has a lot of qualities you find
in a team leader. He will be a great addition to our team.”
Suenaga won the Future Collegians World Tour event at La Costa Resort
with a 3-under par total of 141, and recorded two top 10 finishes in IJGT
tournaments. According to Livingstone, “Issei is a great athlete.
He hits it solid, and he is a hard worker and a great thinker on the course.
He will be a valuable contributor for us the next four years.”
Gibson and Suenaga join fall signees Ricky Montanez
(Helendale, CA, Victor Valley HS) and Eric Pitcaithley (Pleasanton, CA,
Foothill HS) as newcomers on the 49ers 2007-08 roster. For the
first time in several years, the 49er men’s golf team will also
hold try outs at the beginning of the fall semester to give other golfers
enrolled in the university the chance to qualify for the team.
