49ers Tied For 3rd Place In Hawaii

HONOLULU, HI-- The Long Beach State men's golf team is tied for third place after one round of the John Burns Intercollegiate being held at the Leilehua Golf Course in Hawai'i. The 49ers shot a four-under 284 in Wednesday's opening round and are tied with Auburn and Colorado State. UNLV is in first place after shooting an 11-under 277, with BYU in second at 279.

Individually, 49er freshman Michael Drake (Riverside,CA) is in first place after shooting a seven-under 65 in the opening round. Karl Katnik is tied for 15th place with a two-under 70 and Brett Lederer is third with an even par 72. BYU's Nick Becker is in second place, one shot behind Drake, after shooting a six-under 66.

"I was very pleased with how the guys performed today," said 49er Head Coach Bob Livingstone. "There was a steady rain this morning and we really held it together and played well. Mike (Drake) really liked the course during the practice round. He got off to a great start, birding five of the first six holes, and then on he played smart."

The tournament continues with 18 holes on Thursday and concludes with 18 holes on Friday.
