49ers Look To Improve In Hawaii Beach To Compete At John A. Burns Intercollegiate

The event will be held at the Leilehua Golf Club, February 21-23. The 49ers began the spring season with a 16th place finish at the Ping Intercollegiate in Sabino Springs, Arizona.
The Coach: Bob Livingstone is in his 13th season as the head men's golf coach at Long Beach State. Livingstone was named the 2006 Big West Tri-Coach of the Year.
Livingstone on John A. Burns Intercollegiate: "This is obviously the trip everyone points to. It's not just that it's Hawaii, it's that it's a great tournament with a strong field. We've been trying to work some things out, and I really believe the guys are going into this event with good attitudes and high expectations. We finished 12th there last year which was enough to beat some pretty good teams, and we need to get some good wins again this year in order to right the ship and keep our playoff hopes alive." Travel Squad For John A. Burns Intercollegiate: The travel squad for next week's tournament will consist of: Nick Badel, Michael Drake, Karl Katnik, Brett Lederer and Ryan Wood. The John A. Burns Intercollegiate Field: The 21-team field for the John A. Burns Intercollegiate consists of: Arizona, New Mexico, Cal-Berkeley, Auburn, Long Beach State, Denver, UCSB, UNLV, UTEP, Southern Methodist, San Diego State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Jose State, Utah, Hawaii-Manoa, Hawaii-Hilo, BYU, Nevada-Reno, Texas A&M, and San Diego.
The PING Intercollegiate Recap: The 49ers struggled in its first spring tournament. The Long Beach State men's golf team finished in 16th place at the Ping Intercollegiate with a 911. Michael Drake tied for 61st with a 225 (73-75-77) and Nick Badel shot a 226 (76-70-80) finishing close behind. Brett Lederer and Karl Katnik both tied for 76th with a 230. Last Year at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate: Last year the 49ers finished in 12th place at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate. The Long Beach State team shot a 845 for the three rounds. Brett Lederer led the 49ers overall, finishing tied for fifth place with a 204 (65-72-67), 12 shots under par for the tournament. Ryan Wood tied for 56th place with a 214 (74-69-71).
2006-07 Capsules: Kris Assawapimonporn (Junior, Huntington Beach, CA): Finished in 78th place at the Alister MacKenzie Cup with a 239 (79-76-84)... he tied for 36th place at the Del Walker Intercollegiate with a 220 (70-75-75)... tied for 49th at the Northwest Collegiate Classic with a 229 (73-76-80)... came to LBSU from Saddleback JC where he helped lead his team to back-to-back league titles.
Nick Badel (Senior, Lakewood, CA): Played in the PING Intercollegiate and finished tied for 65th with a 226 (76-70-80). He tied his season best 218 (73-74-71) at the Barona Collegiate Cup, tying for 35th... also shot 218 (71-70-77) at the Alister MacKenzie Cup, tying for 35th place with is five-over par score... tied for 67th place at the Gene Miranda Invitational with a 225 (76-73-76)... tied for 66th place, competing as an individual, at the Del Walker Intercollegiate with a 228 (76-73-79)... tied for 49th at the Northwest Collegiate Classic with a 229 (75-79-75).
Michael Drake (Freshman, Riverside, CA): Leading scorer for 49ers at the PING Intercollegiate with a 225 (73-75-77) placing him tied for 61st. Drake tied his best showing as a 49er at the Barona Collegiate Cup, shot 218 (77-72-69) and finished in a tie for 35th... also shot a 218 (71-73-74) and tied for 35th place at the Alister MacKenzie Cup... shot a 222 (76-74-72) in his first collegiate tournament, tying for 49th place at the Gene Miranda Invitational... shot a 221 (78-72-71) at the Del Walker Intercollegiate, tying for 43rd place... tied for 49th at the Northwest Collegiate Classic with a 229 (71-76-82).
Karl Katnik (Redshirt Freshman, Santa Ana, CA): Traveled to PING Intercollegiate and shot a 230 (83-74-73) tying him for 76th with teammate Brett Lederer. Finished with a 233 (73-81-79) at the Barona Collegiate Cup, tying for 91st... had a strong first collegiate tournament, tying for 45th place at the Gene Miranda Invitational with a 221 (74-72-75)... tied for 74th place with a 233 (78-77-78) at the Del Walker Intercollegiate...prepped at Foothill High School... was the Seaview League individual champion in 2004 and 2003... a three-time first team all-league selection... had three top 25 finishes in AJGA Events.
Jeremy Keller (Senior, Las Vegas, NV): Is sitting out this season as a redshirt due to a wrist injury... competed in seven tournaments... tied for third at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational with a 213 (71-73-69)... tied for 30th at the Del Walker Intercollegiate with a 219 (71-76-72).
Brett Lederer (Senior, Lakewood, CA): Came back from an injury at the PING Intercollegiate and tied for 76th with a 230 (74-76-80). Did not play in the fall season due to injury... 2006 second team All-Big West... had three Top 10 finishes... tied for fourth at the Western Intercollegiate with a 141 (70-71)... tied for fifth at the John A. Burns Invitational with a 204 (65-72-67).
Ryan Ritter (Senior, Orange, CA): Finished the PING Intercollegiate in 87th with a 252 (85-81-86). Competed as an individual at the Del Walker Intercollegiate, tying for 72nd place with a 231 (79-74-78)... competed in five tournaments last year, two as an individual... tied for 35th at the 49er Collegiate Classic with a 232 (75-74-83).
Aaron Slonim (Redshirt Freshman, Las Vegas, NV): Tied for 31st place, best on the team, at the Alister MacKenzie Cup... shot a season-low 217 (73-69-75)... tied for 20th place at the Northwest Collegiate Classic with a 222 (75-75-72)... tied for 61st at the Gene Miranda Invitational with a 224 (75-76-73)... tied for 50th at the Del Walker Intercollegiate with a 222 (74-70-78).
Ryan Wood (Senior, Oceanside, CA): Finished the Barona Collegiate Cup tied for 60th with a 222 (71-80-71)... tied for 62nd place at the Alister MacKenzie Cup with a 223 (71-74-78)... tied for 15th place at the Northwest Collegiate Classic with a 221 (71-72-78)... tied for 37th place at the Gene Miranda Invitational shooting a 220 (70-74-76)... tied for 36th place at the Del Walker Intercollegiate with a 220 (71-72-77)... was a first team All-Big West Conference in 2006... selected to compete at the NCAA West Regionals as an individual... tied for 99th place at Regionals with a 223 (79-74-70). |
