Jill Reynolds and Jimmy Grabow Earn Honors

July 20, 2006

LONG BEACH, CA-- The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its NCAA Division I All-Academic Teams and Long Beach State was well represented. The Association honored 75 women's teams that had cumulative grade point averages of 3.0 or higher and 23 men's squads. For an individual to qualify they must have a cumulative gpa of 3.25 or higher and must have met the NCAA Division I regional or national qualifying standard in their event. There were 299 female and 183 male individuals who earned a place on the All-Academic Teams.

The 49er women were one of the 75 squads to earn recognition by virtue of a 3.10 cumulative gpa. Sophomore Jill Reynolds (Castiac, CA) also earned USTFCCCA individual honors. Reynolds, a pole vaulter, won the conference title at the 2006 Big West Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships in May. Reynolds was selected to the 2006 MPSF Indoor Track & Field All-Academic Team and in the spring she was selected to the Big West Conference Spring All-Academic squad.

On the men's side, senior Jimmy Grabow (Running Springs, CA) was selected for the Academic Team. Grabow competed in cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field this year. In cross country, Grabow was a first team All-Big West performer after finishing in eighth place at the league meet. At the NCAA Regionals, he placed 36th. At the 2006 Big West Outdoor Track & Field Championships he finished in second place in the 5,000 meters, to earn all-conference accolades. Grabow was named to the Big West Fall and Spring All-Academic Teams and the 2006 MPSF Indoor Track & Field All-Academic Team.

Shalonda Solomon of South Carolina was honored as the Division I Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the outdoor season while Stanford's Victoria Jackson won for the indoor season. Arkansas' Jaanus Uudmae was the Division I Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the indoor season and Florida State's Garrett Johnson was the winner for the outdoor season.
