FINAL RESULTS FROM BIG WEST CHAMPIONSHIPS
49er Men Tie For 2nd; Women Finish In 4th April 22, 2003
EL DORADO HILLS, CA-- It was a day of mixed results for the 49er men's and women's golf teams on Tuesday at the Big West Conference Championships at Serrano Country Club in El Dorado Hills. The 49ers men shot a 289 in the final round, enabling them to move from fourth place to a tie for second place, alongside Idaho and Cal Poly, in the final standings. The 49er women shot a 324, but were unable to move out of fourth place in the final tournament standings.
On the men's side, UC Irvine won the team title with a 581, while the 49ers, Idaho and Cal Poly all checked in at 589. The 289 registered by the 49ers was the second-best total on tuesday, right behind's UCI's 287. Leading the way for The Beach was junior Chris Gilley who finished in fourth place with a one-over-par 145 (73-72). Senior Tyler Mays tied for fifth with a 146 (75-71) while junior Torey Edwards (78-71) and sophmore James Logeman (74-75) both tied for 13th place with a 149. Mike Lavery of UC Irvine won the individual title with a six-under-par 138 (70-68), while Pete Sisich of CS Northridge was second at 139 (74-65).
"We played very well today," said Men's Head Coach Bob Livingstone. "We just dug too big a hole for ourselves yesterday. We had a good finish though. We'll just have to wait for the NCAA selection committee to do their work to see if we make the Regionals."
On the women's side, the 49ers finished in fourth place behind CS Northridge (617), Idaho (621) and UC Irvine (638) with their 654 score. Senior Teal Thron finished in 11th place with a 162 (84-78), while a trio of 49ers, Hayley Wilkinson (81-83), Melissa Keller (82-82) and Carla Legaspi (83-81), tied for 13th place with a 164. Elizabeth Allen of CS Northridge won the individual title with a two-under-par 142 (72-70), while Stella Lee of UC Irvine finished second at 145 (75-70).
