49ers Lose Heartbreaker to UCSB Borcich Scores in 88th Minute as Gauchos Remain Undefeated
LONG BEACH, CA-- Jennifer Borcich scored in the 88th minute giving UC Santa Barbara (12-3-2, 5-0-1 BWC) a 1-0 lead, and sending the Long Beach State women's soccer team (5-9-4, 3-2-2 BWC) to their second straight Big West loss.
With just over three minutes remaining in the match, the Gauchos were awarded an indirect free kick. Freshman forward Kelly Daugherty nudged the ball over to senior midfielder Jen Codington. Codington, one of five UCSB seniors playing their final home match, cut loose from about 15 yards outside the penalty box. The ball bounced off a defender in front of the goal and Borcich was there to drive it home for the only goal of the match and her 15th of the season. Following Borcich¹s goal, the Gauchos played keep-away for the final 2:40 of the match. Prior to the goal, neither team had many chances to score, however midway through the second half, Borcich had a golden opportunity when she got past the 49er defense and went in one-on-one with Long Beach goalkeeper Hannah Cochrun. Borcich booted the ball straight into Cochrun¹s arms and the score remained 0-0. In a well played game, between teams that each entered the week, undefeated, UCSB held a slight edge in shots, 11 to 10. Forty-Niner Goalie Hannah Cochrun (Irvine, CA) made five saves on the night, including one Borcich sent right at her, midway through the second half. The 49ers had just four shots on goal. The Beach are still just one win away from tying the franchise record for conference victories, set in 2000, when the 49ers went 4-2-2. The 49ers will close out the regular season next weekend by hosting Pacific on Friday at 3p.m. and CS Northridge on Sunday at 1 p.m. Sunday will also be the final matches for Sarah Aguilar, Marisa Barragan, Sarah Gamet, Becky Ricci and Hannah Cochrun. |
