Also a member of the U.S. Water Polo Hall of Fame, in which he was also inducted in 1995, Hermstad is regarded as one of the top officials in the world. Upon his induction, Hermstad officiated at four Olympics (1972, 1976, 1984 and 1988) and 12 NCAA Tournaments in addition to countless world-caliber events. Swim World named him one of the top-10 water polo officials in the world. He was also a coach at Golden West Junior College, winning more than 400 games and winning 17 consecutive league titles. A graduate of Long Beach State (1957-61), he led the 49ers to two state championships and was a captain his senior season. In 1979 he was voted State Water Polo Coach of the Year.
