His career began as an athlete at Long Beach State, where he held the school standard in the 440 and was a member of record-setting 440, 880 and mile relay teams. As a coach for six years at Long Beach State, Allice-coached teams won two Pacific Coast Athletic Association titles and were runnersup four times. His last Long Beach State team was rated the nation's seventh-best dual meet squad by Track and Field News. His Long Beach City College-coached teams won 12 Southern California and nine state titles.
