A distance runner in the 1960s, Lee sparked a 49er track team to top-10 finishes in the NCAA college division championships in 1963 (fourth), 1964 (second) and 1965 (eighth). As a sophomore, Lee was the NCAA college division 880 champion. At one time Lee held school records in the 800 and mile events, and he was a part of several school-record relay teams.
