Shy played two years for the 49ers (1964-65) and starred at halfback. In 1964 the 49ers were 8-2 and in 1965 The Beach finished at 9-1, with their only loss coming at Cal State LA, 27-21. As a junior Shy averaged 6.1 yards per carry, rushing for 354 yards on 58 attempts. He scored five touchdowns on the year as well. As a senior in 1965 Shy ran for 488 yards and seven touchdowns while averaging 4.8 yards per carry.
