Has had two successful athletic careers, first as a pole vaulter, where he was a conference champion and placed fifth in the 1976 Olympic Trials, and then, after being paralyzed in a 1978 accident, as a wheelchair racer. He has won the Long Beach Marathon four times and the Paris and Boston Marathons twice each. On Oct. 2, 1990 he was in the 53-mile Hardee's National Cup Series Wheelchair Race of Champions.
