1989

Alvarez earned six letters at Long Beach State, three in football and three in wrestling. He was a starting guard for the 49er football team in the 1959, 1960 and 1961, earning honorable mention small college All-America recognition for his play in 1960. Injures impacted Alvarez's wrestling career with the 49ers, but he still was imposing enough to be chosen team captain of the wrestling squad in 1961.
