A silver-medal winner in the 1972 Olympic Games for his native West Germany, Fassnacht was a big part of four consecutive PCAA championship teams for the 49ers. During his career with the 49ers (1969-73), Fassnacht captured 12 PCAA and two NCAA event championships. He was also a four-time AAU champion for the Long Beach-based Phillips 66 Swim Club.
