Gary Patterson was one of three runners to qualify for the 1962 NCAA Championships, a first for Long Beach State as one of the standout competitors in the early days of the program. Patterson finished with five podium finishes at the NCAA Championships, with four second place finishes and a third place as well. He was also a multiple CCAA Conference champion as an outstanding hurdler.
