In that state Olympiad, Ilman was fourth in the 100-meter freestyle. He also won gold medals in the Pan American Games (1963) and the World Student Games (1965). While at Long Beach, Ilman was a two-time All-American. His coaching career took him to the national team, Montreal Athletic Club, Alabama (assistant), Colorado State (head coach), and Midland, Texas (age group) before entering the electronics industry in 1981.
