Chosen "49er of the Year" in 1960, McIlroy was a member of the 1960 and 1964 Olympic water polo teams. In 1964, McIlroy's borthers, Ned and Paul, were also members of the Olympic water polo team. McIlroy was inducted inot the United States Water Polo Hall of Fame in 1981. In September, 1987, McIlroy celebrated a quarter century of participation with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District, where he was a counselor and water polo coach at Miraleste High School.
