A former "B" football player at Jordan High, Evans was the first and possibly only athlete to earn eight varsity letters at Long Beach State. A utility player on the 49er baseball team, Evans earned All-California Coast Athletic Association honors three times while batting .343 in 391 career at-bats. A lineman on the football team, he was chosen the university's Athlete of the Year in 1959. A former teacher and coach, Evans set up four Wienerschnitzel franchises in Orange County. He also ran numerous marathons, including the Boston Marathon.
