The sixth man on LBSU's best-ever team, the 24-2 team of 1973-74, Gross came into his own years later, stabilizing an inexperienced group of athletes into a team that collected the school's sixth consecutive Pacific Coast Athletic Association title. Ranked among the conference leaders in scoring, rebounding, assists, field goal and free-throw percentage, Gross was the conference's Most Valuable Player and an All-America selection. Chosen in the second round of the 1975 NBA draft, Gross played professional basketball for seven seasons. He was a starting forward for the 1976-77 Portland Trail Blazers, who won the NBA ttitle. In the deciding sixth game, Gross scored 24 points.
