A national championship in the hammer and all-conference recognition in football earned Pinkerton recognition as Long Beach's outstanding all-around athlete in 1961. A 6-1, 200-pound end, Pinkerton was a small college All-West selection his senior season (1960). The following spring, Pinkerton, who also earned four letters in track, became the first 49er athlete to win an NCAA championship with his victory in the hammer throw.
