Lynn Hoyem

One of the most popular and inspirational athletes in the university's history, Hoyem, a 175-pound high school quarterback, became a 240-pound center at LBSU. He noted at the time, "They decided I could pass better upside down." He was the first 49er to be drafted by an NFL team, going to Dallas in the 19th round of the 1961 draftt after earning second team All-California Coast Athletic Association honors for the 49ers. After playing for the Cowboys and Eagles, Hoyem became a pilot for Northwest Airlines. He died in 1973 when his private plane crashed.
