LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State Women's Volleyball team kicks off the fall season with an exhibition contest on Saturday, August 20. The Beach will host Pepperdine at 12:30 p.m. in the Walter Pyramid.
NEW ERA
The Beach will have a new look in 2022 as head coach Tyler Hildebrand begins his first year at the helm, while his staff of Cursty Le Roux, Kim Hill, and Jordan Molina will be all new faces on the sidelines this season.
ABOUT THE RETURNERS
Long Beach State will return nine letterwinners from a year ago, including 2021 Big West All-First Team selection Katie Kennedy. Kennedy, a junior outside hitter/opposite, will be joined by junior libero Nicole Hoff, sophomore middle blocker Kameron Bacon, and junior setter/outside hitter Tia Chavira.
ABOUT THE NEWCOMERS
In addition, LBSU will welcome nine newcomers to the squad in redshirt freshman setter Zayna Meyer, redshirt junior outside hitter Morgan Chacon, senior outside hitter Victoria O'Sullivan, senior middle blocker Callie Schwarzenbach, and sophomore outside hitter Natalie Glenn.
LAST SEASON
Long Beach State put together a 16-15 overall record and went 10-10 in Big West Conference action. LBSU finished the 2021 campaign strong as they closed out the season on a six-match winning streak, defeating conference foes CSUN, UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego, UC Irvine, UC Davis, and UC Riverside.
ABOUT PEPPERDINE
Pepperdine finished the 2021 season with a 22-6 overall record and a 14-4 West Coast Conference mark. The Waves punched their ticket to the NCAA Tournament, but lost, 3-1, in the First Round to UCF. The 2022 squad is receiving votes in the AVCA Coaches Poll as they return seven key players from last season, including five starters. Senior Rachel Ahrens, and AVCA All-American and an All-WCC selection will lead the way along with seniors Isabel Zelaya, and Kayleigh Hames. Reigning WCC Freshman of the Year, Grace Chillingworth, will also be back on the court along with All-WCC Second Team selection Meg Brown.
SEASON OPENER
Long Beach State will open the 2022 season on Friday, August 26 at the Portland State Tournament where they will take on Oregon State on Friday at 11 a.m., before facing the host Vikings on Friday at 6 p.m.
HOME OPENER
LBSU will play its home opener at the Walter Pyramid on Thursday, September 1 against Boise State at 7 p.m. as part of the Long Beach State Tournament, which also includes Notre Dame. The Beach will host the Fighting Irish on Saturday, September 3 at 7 p.m. to conclude the tournament.
