LONG BEACH - The Long Beach State women's basketball team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a 67-49 win over UC Irvine Saturday afternoon at the Walter Pyramid.
"We started off really strong," head coach Jody Wynn said. "We moved the ball well and got some good shots. We wanted to establish a presence in the paint whether it was passing the ball or driving inside, and Madison (Montgomery) did a great job in the first half, bringing us some much needed energy. She got herself open for some easy finishes down low and got herself to the free throw line."
Junior Madison Montgomery ended up going 7-for-8 from the foul line and finished with a team-high 13 points. Sophomore Gigi Hascheff also made three 3-pointers for 11 points, while junior Raven Benton totaled nine points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals with only one turnover.
Junior Anna Kim contributed eight points, three assists and three steals, and freshman Chanterria Jackson matched her season high with seven boards.
The Beach (21-7, 10-4 Big West) shot 36.5 percent from the field, drained 11 threes and scored 24 points off of 25 Anteater turnovers. LBSU also finished with 15 assists and 12 steals.
UC Irvine (4-24, 1-13 Big West) scored the first four points of the game, but after Long Beach State called a quick timeout it got on the board with a 3-pointer from sophomore Cecily Wilson at the 8:37 mark. The Beach then extended that into a 23-1 run over the next seven minutes to pull ahead by 18, and held a comfortable 23-7 advantage at the end of the quarter. The 49ers shot 50 percent from the floor, while holding the Anteaters to a 27.3 clip.
Long Beach State cooled off in the second period where it made just 26.3 percent of its field goal attempts. The Beach did account for the first five points to go on top, 28-7, with 8:33 to play, but UCI answered with a 9-0 run to make it a 12-point game. That was the closest the `Eaters would get, however, as LBSU went back up by 16 and carried a 34-20 cushion into the locker room.
The 49ers took a 38-20 lead following a Kim 3-pointer at the 9:02 mark of the third frame. UC Irvine closed the gap to 12 again, but another 5-0 spurt, capped by a Jackson three, gave Long Beach State a 50-32 advantage.
The Beach opened the fourth quarter with a triple from Benton and then got back-to-back treys from Hascheff and freshman Katie Webster to close out a 17-4 run that put the home team on top, 64-41, with 5:41 remaining. LBSU cruised the rest of the way to the 67-49 victory.
Jenny Dee paced the Anteaters with 13 points, while Tayla Jackson had nine points and nine rebounds.
Long Beach State will host UC Davis in its final regular-season home game next Thursday (March 3). Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid and the Beach will honor its lone senior, Chantel Dooley, following the game.
