DAVIS, Calif. - The Long Beach State women's basketball team put together a solid 40 minutes as it defeated UC Davis, 75-62, Thursday evening at The Pavilion. It was the 49ers' fifth-straight road win, but their first victory in Davis since 2009.
"I think we were just on a mission to out-execute (UC Davis)," seventh-year head coach Jody Wynn said. "They are a very good executing team offensively and they try to slow you down, but I think we did a really good job of not turning the ball over. We shared the ball, took what the defense gave us and our kids stepped up tonight and made big shots."
Junior Anna Kim led the Beach with a season-high 18 points. She was 6-of-11 from the field and 4-for-5 from 3-point range. Junior Jewelyn Sawyer added 16 points (6-of-10) and a team-high five rebounds, while sophomore Gigi Hascheff also netted a season-best 16 points. Hascheff was 5-of-8 and 4-of-5 from behind the arc. Junior Raven Benton just missed a double-double with eight points and a career-high nine assists.
As a team, the 49ers shot 44.1 percent from the field and 57.9 percent from long distance. They forced 21 turnovers -- which resulted in 26 points - while committing a season-low nine miscues of their own. They also finished with 18 assists and 12 steals.
Long Beach State (15-5, 4-2 Big West) got off to a hot start, pulling ahead, 18-7, on a Chanterria Jackson jumper at the 3:25 mark. The two teams then traded points before UC Davis scored 10 unanswered to cut the LBSU lead to 23-22 at the end of the first quarter.
The Aggies (11-8, 4-2 Big West) accounted for the first five points of the second period, extending their run to 15-0 and giving them a 27-23 advantage. The Beach reclaimed the edge at 28-27 with a Hascheff three, but the lead would change hands four more times before intermission. LBSU closed out the quarter on a 9-4 run, which included a pair of triples from Kim, to go on top 40-37 at the half.
UCD came within one early in the third frame, but the 49ers responded with a 14-8 spurt to pull ahead, 54-47, with 1:49 remaining. The Aggies then sank a couple of free throws to make it 54-49 after three.
It was all Long Beach State in the fourth quarter as it increased its cushion to eight at 61-53 after Hascheff's fourth three of the night. The Beach continued to roll, going up 70-60 on a couple of free throws from Kim, and closed out strong for the 75-62 victory.
The 49ers held UC Davis to 1-of-11 from beyond the arc in the second half. The Aggies only had two field goals in the fourth quarter, but made 9-of-10 at the charity stripe. They finished the evening shooting 38.5 percent from the floor and 25.0 percent from 3-point range.
Celia Marfone paced UCD with 18 points, while Morgan Bertsch had 14. Alyson Doherty also pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
Long Beach State has a quick turnaround as it returns to the Walter Pyramid to host Cal Poly at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30.
